CUTbrU Wins The Brewing and Tasting Intervarsity Competition. The Central University of Technology, Free State beer brewing team, CUTbrU, recently clinched top honors at the Brewing and Tasting Intervarsity competition. Held in collaboration with SAB and CUT, through CAFSaB in association with UFS, this event showcases the best of beer brewing talent among university students.

Victory in the IPA Category
CUTbrU triumph was no small feat. Not only did they secure the best IPA category, but they also walked away with the prestigious Best Beer on Show award. This remarkable achievement crowned them as the overall winners of the event.
A Celebrated Tradition
The competition, now in its 13th year, has become a celebrated tradition. It serves to ignite a passion for brewing and beer culture among students. Participants engage in a competitive yet educational environment, where judging is conducted according to the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) style guide.
Dedication and Adaptability
Despite facing challenges such as the national lockdown, which disrupted their plans, the team demonstrated unwavering dedication. They adapted to the circumstances, working with a modified basic brew kit. This flexibility and commitment were instrumental in their success.
Words Of Joy And Determination
Reflecting on their victory, team members expressed a mix of joy and determination. Puleng Zacharia shared, “I was in total shock, especially with the African Premium Beer. It was a tricky beer so getting recognized was exciting.”
Janwillem Scheepers added, “I was very relieved when we won because it was a stressful week leading up to the competition. Now I’m excited to build on this because we need to set our sights on winning again next year.”
Lehlohonolo Qhanya remarked, “When you start something you want to finish on a very high note and you set high standards. Best of Show overall really means that all the effort that was put in was worth it, it is quite exciting.”
Aiming for Continued Excellence
As they revel in their victory, the team is already looking ahead. Dr. Olga de Smidt emphasized the importance of maintaining their standards: “It is kind of surreal and I’m excited but also a little bit nervous because now we have to keep it up… It’s not just about winning the best of show but also about the presence of CUT in the competition.”
