Purpose of the Job

As a key member of CUT’s administrative team, the Judicial Officer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the fair and impartial resolution of disciplinary matters. Upholding a safe and inclusive campus environment stands as the primary objective.

The incumbent shoulders the responsibility of maintaining consistency, efficiency, and quality in delivering legal services while safeguarding CUT against monetary and reputational risks.

Main Tasks

The role encompasses a diverse array of responsibilities, including:

  1. Student Disciplinary Hearings: Conducting impartial hearings to address disciplinary issues among students.
  2. Student Disciplinary Appeal: Facilitating the appeal process ensuring procedural fairness and adherence to university policies.
  3. Policy Development and Compliance: Contributing to the formulation and enforcement of policies to uphold standards of conduct and compliance.
  4. Educational Outreach: Engaging in educational initiatives to promote awareness and understanding of legal rights and responsibilities within the university community.
  5. Mediation and Conflict Resolution: Employing mediation techniques to resolve disputes and conflicts effectively.
  6. Collaboration and Communication: Working collaboratively with various stakeholders within the university community, fostering open communication channels.
  7. Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintaining accurate records of disciplinary proceedings and generating reports as required.
  8. Budgetary and Cost Control: Ensuring prudent financial management within the jurisdiction of the role.
  9. Staff Development and Supervision: Providing guidance and supervision to staff members involved in disciplinary processes.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB).
  • Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
  • Minimum of 2 years post-admission experience in civil and criminal litigation or 1-year prosecutorial experience in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 2 years judicial experience in higher education.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant legislation and legal processes, including but not limited to the Protection of Personal Information Act, Promotion of Access to Information Act, and Higher Education Act.

Desired Qualifications and Experience

Candidates with the following additional qualifications and experience will be preferred:

  • Minimum of 4 years post-admission experience in civil and criminal litigation or 2 years prosecutorial experience in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 4 years judicial experience in higher education.
