Hydrology and Water Resource Management is a Distinctive Career Option at CUT. CUT BSc Hydrology and Water Resources Management program offers a unique career path for learners. The Department of Civil Engineering hosted a Water Science Fair in September 2023 to introduce this new program, aiming to stimulate interest, educate, and create awareness among grade 12 STEM learners about water resources management.

The Water Science Fair

Teachers and grade 12 STEM learners from various high schools in and around Bloemfontein attended the fair, where they listened to presentations by experts in the water sector. By the end of the event, approximately 40 learners had already submitted their applications for the 2020 academic year.

CUT Qualifications and Requirements

To qualify for the three-year program, learners must have a minimum admission score of 28 points and 50% in the Life Sciences/Physiology, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences subjects.

CUT Industry Partnerships

CUT invited role players and partners from both private and public organizations in the Central Region to share their knowledge, expertise, career options, and bursary opportunities related to the program. Presenters included Bloemwater, Mangaung Municipality, EWSETA, Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation, IWater Solutions, and SADC-GMI.

CUT Programme Details

Dr. Saheed Oke, Senior Lecturer in the department and project leader, highlighted the critical role of hydrology and water-related sciences, emphasizing their scarcity in South Africa. The program covers various areas of study, including water quality, treatment, distribution, management, groundwater exploration, environmental health, and more. Graduates can work in sectors such as municipalities, water boards, government, research institutes, and academic institutions.
