CUT 7th Construction Industry Conversation On Enhancing Soft skills In Construction Management. The 7th Construction Industry Conversations, held on 12th March 2024 at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Association of Construction Project Managers (ACPM), delved into the importance of enhancing soft skills in construction management.

Key Discussions and Presentations

The event featured esteemed presenters such as Ms. Lungiswa Moko from Building Infrastructure- New Works DPWI Eastern Cape, Mr. Jiba Magwaza, and Clive Rangata from Mabizo, Ms. Zimkitha Dlepu, Chief Quantity Surveyor, DPWI Free State, and Mr. Gabuka Booi, Marketing and Facilitation from Moladi Construction. These industry experts emphasized the need for continuous improvement in both surface competencies (knowledge and skills) and core competencies for effective construction management practices.

Addressing Industry Challenges

Prof. Alfred Ngowi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research Innovation, and Engagement, highlighted the imperative of digitization in the construction industry. He noted that while the construction sector faces significant productivity challenges, embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) could revolutionize the industry. AI applications, when integrated into construction processes, have the potential to mitigate cost and schedule overruns and enhance overall safety on construction sites.

A Step Towards Safety

During the workshop, Prof. Fidelis Emuze, Professor: Built Environment, launched a pocketbook on construction safety for South Africa. This book serves as a valuable reference guide, outlining common hazards and risks encountered on construction sites, thereby contributing to a safer working environment for construction professionals.
