Dedicated Start-Up Entrepreneur Flourishes at CUT. Gareth Gerick, a student at CUT, embarked on a remarkable journey when he entered the Idea Gym Innovation Challenge with his brainchild, Hydro-IT. His victory in the competition not only earned him a cash prize but also provided the platform to nurture and evolve his idea into a viable commercial product.

Today, Gareth stands as a testament to the potential of dedicated student entrepreneurs, seamlessly balancing his pursuit of a master’s degree in engineering with the demands of founding and leading Hydro-IT.

Gareth Gerick is not your typical master’s student. Alongside his academic pursuits, he is the driving force behind Hydro-IT, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing water management in South Africa. Fueled by his passion for innovation and inspired by the pressing issue of water wastage due to leaks, Gareth set out to make a difference in his community.

The Genesis of Hydro-IT

The inception of Hydro-IT can be traced back to Gareth’s observations of water leaks during his daily commute to university. Motivated to address this pervasive problem, he conceived Hydro-IT—an innovative solution designed to detect, control, and communicate water leaks through IoT Water Monitors installed on municipal pipelines. With South Africa grappling with a staggering national water loss average of 39%, amounting to billions of liters wasted annually, Gareth saw an opportunity to effect significant change through technology.

Empowered by the Idea Gym: Gareth Journey to Success

Gareth attributes much of his success to the support and guidance he received from the Idea Gym. As the winner of the i-Gym Innovation Challenge in 2019, Gareth gained access to invaluable resources and mentorship that propelled Hydro-IT from concept to reality. His participation in the i-GYM EDP further accelerated the growth of his venture, culminating in collaborations with prestigious institutions like UCT and CUT Infrastructure for testing and development.

A Trailblazer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation

From being published in international journals to clinching victories in esteemed competitions like the EDHE Regional Round and SA Innovation Summit, Gareth has firmly established himself as a leader in his field.
