CUT Announces Entrepreneurial Matriculant of The Year. The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), in collaboration with Standard Bank South Africa (SBSA) and the Central Media Group (CMG), proudly hosted the inaugural 2024 Entrepreneurial Matriculant of the Year Competition.

The event culminated in the announcement of the top five finalists at a prestigious Gala Event held on May 8, 2024, at the esteemed CUT Hotel School.

CUT Unveiling the Top Talent

Amidst fierce competition, Mia Olivier from Oranje Meisieskool emerged as the deserving winner, clinching the coveted first place and a remarkable cash prize of R20,000. Following closely behind, Neo Mvambi from Eunice High School secured the second position, earning a commendable R15,500. The third spot was claimed by Willie Pretorious from Hoerskool Sentraal, who was awarded R12,000. Sebastian Meyer and Chantel Chimbunde, securing the fourth and fifth positions respectively, received R8,500 and R5,000.

Reflecting on her victory, Mia Olivier expressed profound gratitude, stating, “I’m very proud of myself. It still feels a bit unreal, but I’m so thankful to be able to be a part of this competition. I just want to thank CUT for the amazing opportunity they have given us. The most important thing I’ve learned is to persevere in the corporate world and to keep on believing in yourself.”

CUT Empowering Future Leaders

Beyond the accolades and cash prizes, the top five finalists were granted full bursaries to pursue their academic aspirations at the Central University of Technology. This comprehensive package includes coverage for tuition, accommodation, and books throughout the duration of their chosen academic programmes.

CUT Nurturing Entrepreneurial Spirit

The competition attracted 68 enterprising grade 11 learners, each bringing forth their innovative business concepts. Following a meticulous evaluation process, 16 finalists were nominated to advance to the final stage of the competition. From March 6 to March 27, 2024, these finalists underwent intensive virtual training sessions, encompassing all facets of establishing and managing a prosperous business venture.

Under the mentorship of seasoned professionals, the participants honed their theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing meticulously for the competition’s grand finale. Their dedication and commitment were lauded by Prof. Henk de Jager, the esteemed Vice-Chancellor and Principal of CUT. Prof. de Jager commended the finalists for their exemplary attendance and unwavering enthusiasm, emphasizing the competition’s pivotal role in fostering entrepreneurial acumen and critical thinking among South Africa’s youth.
