Imbizo Highlights
The two-day Imbizo was instrumental in aligning CUT’s brand and image for upcoming outreach programs. Key discussions centered around developing and adopting a revised recruitment plan, strengthening recruitment efforts for 2024, and enhancing student intake in STEM fields. The session provided a platform for stakeholders to evaluate intervention strategies for addressing the declining trend in STEM intake.
Recruitment Strategies
The session focused on increasing student recruitment outside the Free State province and attracting students from a broader range of schools within the province. In 2022, 76 percent of the university’s enrollment came from the Free State Province. However, there has been a notable improvement, with a 10 percent increase in students from outside the province, reflecting a more diversified student profile.
Vision 2030 Goals
CUT aims to increase student intake in the priority area of Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) by 50 percent. This aligns with South Africa’s critical skills shortage list, highlighting the importance of these fields in addressing societal challenges.
Strategic Collaboration
Dr. Gary Paul, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Resources and Operations, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving strategic goals. He highlighted the role of student recruitment teams in providing technological solutions to address socio-economic differences, emphasizing the synergy achieved through collaborative efforts.
Path to Vision 2030
The Communications and Marketing section is leading collaborative initiatives across all four faculties and various support departments. This initiative aims to enhance the university’s brand awareness in the central region of South Africa and internationally in various SADC regions.
Conclusion
CUT Student Recruitment Team annual planning session has set the stage for strategic collaboration and innovative recruitment strategies to achieve Vision 2030. By focusing on STEM fields and diversifying student intake, CUT is poised to make a significant impact on the socio-economic landscape of South Africa.
