The Significance of Africa Day

Africa Day is a day dedicated to building a strong and united Africa. It is a day to embrace and celebrate the diversity of Africans while acknowledging the continent’s rich culture and heritage. This year’s Africa Month is celebrated under the theme: “The year of Arts, Culture and Heritage: in the year of Charlotte Maxeke”. This theme underscores the importance of arts, culture, and heritage in shaping the African identity and building the Africa we want.

Challenges Amidst Celebration

The celebration of Africa Day comes at a time when the continent is facing significant challenges, particularly the harsh effects of the COVID-19

pandemic, which have had a profound impact on the African economy. Despite these challenges, Africa continues to show resilience and determination in overcoming obstacles and building a brighter future for its people.

CUT Vision for the Future

CUT aspires to be a leading African University of Technology by 2030. This vision goes beyond geographical location; it speaks to the university’s commitment to addressing the social and economic challenges facing the continent. CUT aims to achieve this by embracing indigenous knowledge, decolonizing its curriculum, and promoting distinctly African values such as Ubuntu.

A Call for Solidarity

In his message, Prof. Henk de Jager, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of CUT, called upon all stakeholders to join efforts in protecting CUT’s heritage. He emphasized the importance of strong and servant leadership, solidarity, and the spirit of Ubuntu in achieving institutional efficiency and building the Africa we want.

As CUT commemorates Africa Day 2024, it stands as a beacon of hope and progress for the continent. The university’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and African values is a testament to its dedication to shaping the future of Africa. Let us all join hands in celebrating Africa’s unity and solidarity, and work together towards a brighter future for all Africa.
