The Central University of Technology (CUT) Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (CRPM) is revolutionizing dentistry through its advanced 3D printing technology. This innovation, part of the Additive Manufacturing of Medical Devices (MedAdd) initiative, aims to bridge the gap in using additive manufacturing for medical devices.

Since its launch in February 2020, MedAdd has significantly impacted public and private health facilities. By leveraging modern technology, CRPM has transformed the lives of many by providing prosthetics and reconstructive surgery.

Empowering Dental Professionals

On March 7, 2023, CRPM showcased its 3D printing solutions to dental professionals, inviting them to explore how this technology can enhance their practice. These solutions include 3D printed Cobalt-Chrome removable partial denture frames and bars, promising a new era of dental innovation.

Driving Localisation and Job Creation

Dr. Gerrie Booysen, Director of CRPM, highlighted the project’s goal to localize dental technology production, aiming to upskill dental technicians in digital workflows. This effort not only creates job opportunities but also boosts market competitiveness.

CRPM focus on cost-effective solutions, such as the development of Removable Partial Denture Frames (RPD’s), has made treatment accessible to a broader community. This approach has significantly improved the quality of life for many patients who previously could not afford expensive restorations.
