CUT 8th Innovation in Learning and Teaching Conference. The 8th Innovation in Learning and Teaching Conference, hosted by the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), was held on 20th and 21st June 2024. The conference brought together academics, researchers, and practitioners to share insights and experiences on enhancing teaching and learning in higher education.

The conference aimed to explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning that can enhance student engagement and success, particularly for students from diverse backgrounds. CUT Key Speakers and Presentations

One of the keynote speakers, Dr. Mpho Jama, a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Student Learning and Development at the University of the Free State, delivered a presentation on “Integrating values in curricular and co-curricular education environments and activities.” Dr. Jama emphasized the importance of creating inclusive and humanistic education environments that support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

She highlighted the role of universities in fostering hope and aspirations among students and addressing societal challenges.

Another keynote speaker, Dr. Manyane Makua, the Senior Director of the Teaching and Learning Development Centre at CUT, presented on “Enhancing teaching and learning by promoting university values.” Dr. Makua discussed the challenges facing higher education in South Africa, including language accessibility, poverty, and entitlement issues among students and academics.

He emphasized the need for universities to be designed around students’ needs and called for a focus on promoting excellence in teaching and learning.
