Eskom Regional Science Exhibition at CUT Welkom Campus

Eskom Regional Science Exhibition at CUT Welkom Campus. The Eskom Regional Science Exhibition, following a successful event in Bloemfontein, continued at the CUT Welkom Campus on August 11 and 12, 2023. The event saw the participation of grades 4-12 from 22 schools in the Lejweleputswa District. The exhibition aims to inspire learners to explore science research and pursue STEM careers.

Research Projects and Judging

A total of 115 research projects were submitted across 13 categories, divided into grades 4-7, 8-9, and 10-12. The projects were evaluated by 55 judges using a national rubric, focusing on scientific principles, creativity, written work, and oral presentation. Categories included Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Biomedical and Medical Sciences, Animal Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Plant Sciences, Computer Sciences, and Energy and Social Sciences.

Impact and Recognition

Prof. Solomon Makola, Welkom Campus Director, commended the young scientists for their passion and innovation, highlighting their potential to shape the future. The exhibition awarded 25 bronze, 19 silver, and 15 gold medals. Notable projects included Karmni Visser’s ‘Fantastic Plastic’ winning Best Female Engineering Project, and Kganyo Makapane’s ‘Hybotene: Hybrid Energy Robot’ winning Best Energy Project.
