Leading the Way in Renewable Energy
Located at the sports field of CUT Bloemfontein campus, the solar plant comprises 12 PV solar arrays designed to generate electricity. Beyond serving as a power source, the plant doubles as an extensive laboratory for academic research projects, offering a hands-on learning experience for both young and senior academics, as well as practical classes for engineering students.
Energy Independence and Cost Savings
According to Dr. Philip Koko, Senior Lecturer in Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering at CUT, the installation of solar panels has significantly reduced the university’s reliance on electricity supplied by Centlec. Dr. Koko highlights the substantial cost savings achieved through solar energy generation, citing examples from 2023 and 2024 where the solar panels saved the university R878,416 and R706,769, respectively, in electricity costs.
Driving Research and Innovation
Beyond the economic benefits, the solar plant serves as a hub for academic research. Students and faculty members have the opportunity to explore various research projects related to solar photovoltaic energy, enhancing their understanding and contributing to the advancement of renewable energy technologies. For instance, ongoing studies have focused on improving the efficiency of the solar panels, with promising results.
A Vision for the Future
Prof. Alfred Ngowi, acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal at CUT, emphasizes the university’s commitment to renewable energy solutions and its role in supporting national development objectives. He views investments in renewable energy as not only an opportunity to expand knowledge and research but also as a means to address the energy supply and demand challenges facing the country.
Conclusion
CUT solar initiative stands as a testament to its dedication to sustainability and innovation. By harnessing the power of the sun, the university is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also empowering its students and researchers to shape a more sustainable future
